Extending the Shields criterion to erosion of weakly cemented granular soils

This contribution tackles the issue of incipient conditions for initiation erosion by a fluid flow at surface cohesive materials. To this end, typical assessment procedure consists subjecting soil sample to progressive hydrodynamic stresses induced submerged impinging jet whose injection velocity is gradually increased. paper presents results an extensive use protocol both in experiments and numerical simulations, latter being based on coupled DEM LBM approach. Here we consider specific case weakly cemented soils, either made experimentally glass beads bonded solid bridges or modelled numerically bond rheology with parabolic yield condition involving micromechanical traction, shearing bending bonds. The show that, as expected, stress onset substantially increases cohesion compared cohesionless cases but can, however, be satisfactorily predicted simple extension usual Shields criterion that only applies cohesion-less granular sediments. includes number, Bond definition tensile values.
